Study: Reaching Light Users, Niche Sites Is Key for Advertisers


If you want to reach more people, you don't necessarily need to advertise only on the biggest sites, according to a joint research study released today by DoubleClick and comScore Media Metrix. The differences of audiences of larger portals and more targeted sites can be better understood by considering the difference between reach -- which is the percentage of a target audience that visited a site -- and composition -- which is the percentage of a site's total audience that is made up of a target audience.

The study found that sites with targeted content can reach a larger proportion of a targeted audience -- in other words, high reach is not always consistent with a high composition. High-reach sites, because they are visited by most consumers in the Internet population, generally have demographic compositions that closely mirror the Internet average. On sites with more specialized content, and a clearer skew towards a target audience, the probability of an ad actually being viewed by the target is much higher.

In the October statistics just released, travelers spent a total of 15.5 minutes and searched over 22 pages on our site. That is nearly double the time spent and pages viewed by travelers on other travel websites!

Half of all U.S. adults (101.9 million) say that they use the travel media - everything from newspaper travel sections and television travel shows to online newsletters - to plan their vacations. Twenty-eight percent say they used newspaper travel sections to plan their travel in the past year, 21% used an Internet website for their travel planning and 21% used television travel shows such as CNN Travel Guide. However, when travelers who use more than one travel medium were asked which travel medium is most useful to them, 24% say that they find Internet websites most useful, followed by newspaper travel sections and television travel shows. Half of travel media users (50%) say they read, watch or listen to travel media at least once a month or once a week. About one third (31%) of travelers have decided to visit a travel destination because of information that they saw or read in the travel media.
