The city is rich in history and world renowned landmarks, which makes Orlando our spotlight destination for this month.
Orlando is the sixth largest city in Florida, named after the infamous soldier, Orlando Reeves, who died during the war against the Seminole Indians in 1836. It has been pushed to the forefront of the Floridian landscape as tourism and downtown growth have given Orlando it's much deserved recognition within the last decade.
In 1965 Walt Disney decided that Orlando was to be the new vacation destination spot. He announced his plans for Walt Disney World. Walt chose Orlando as opposed to other large Florida cities due to the decreased threat of Hurricanes, in comparison to Miami and Tampa. Since the addition of Walt Disney World, many other theme parks have sprung up, making Orlando a family favorite for travelers, year round.
Orlando is rich in culture and is home to a very diverse population, including many Puerto-Rican, Cuban, Russian, Indian and Vietnamese communities. While you are visiting the city, be sure to check out Little India and Little Vietnam, home to several amazing restaurants and shops.
O-Town residents are proud of their celebrity ties and musical background. Many pop icons got their start with producers and studios in the Orlando area. Comedian Wayne Brady and actors Wesley Snipes and Delta Burke are natives of Orlando, to name a few. The city has often times been referred to as Hollywood East due to the many movie studios and cinematic enterprises located there.
